REGIONALIZATION

The regionalisation has been established based on different climate characteristic.

Mediterranean and submediterranean climate is distinguished by mild winter and with quite hot and dry summer. Also transition to spring and autumn is progressive. From phenological stages it could be observed that especially in wheat production growth period is lower than in continental region. It is also obvious that minimum of Juliann days for each phenological stage and crop is established earlier due to greater sum of temperature. More significant difference is masked due to wide selection of varieties.

Hot summer and cold winter are major characteristics for a climate in continental region. Average year rainfalls are in range from 700 to up to 1300 mm but with uneven rainfall distribution so leaching of nitrogen and pesticides could be one of more important environmental concerns in some area with intensive agricultural production.

The major differences between both regions are often masked due to wide range of varieties. This is especially evident in maize production where different hybrids equalise differences among phenological stages between both regions.

PHENOLOGICAL DATA

The following experts were involved in phenological data collection:

  • Stanko Ambruz - Sugar Factory
  • Anka Pozenel, Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia - Agriculture Advisory Service

The following experts were involved in phenological data collection:

  • Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy, Environmetal Agency (Slovenian Hydrometeorological Institute)
  • Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing
  • Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia, Agriculture Advisory service
  • Tovarna sladkorja d.d. (Sugar Factory)

Phenological data from Mediterranean region are part of official phenological observations managed by Environmental Agency. Data obtained for continental part have origin in different sources. The major source is phenological observation done by services for plant protection forecasting while expert knowledge has been used for sugar beet production. Sometimes, wide range of data of particular phenological phase reflects observations of earlier and late varieties.

Differences can be also result of different data sources. Phenological data obtained from Environmental Agency ( Slovenian Hydrometeorological Institute) presents long-term data but usually from only one or two location in specific region. Other data reflect circumstances in past 5 to maximum 10 years. Data obtained are reliable but due to different method used to collect them are sometimes not very consistent. However the difference are not so big. Due to wide range of min and max values the average data from sources that include several locations have greater practical value.
