AGRICULTURE PRACTICES CALENDAR

After deep ploughing usually done in September, harrowing with disk harrow follows. Fertilising with NPK takes place after basic cultivation. It is followed by final cultivation with combined field cultivators for seedbed preparation. Sowing should be done in October in both regions, however in Mediterranean region is also acceptable early November sowing. Usual weeding takes place in spring but it is not uncommon to perform this operation in autumn. Two additional fertilising can be done in phase of shooting and heading formation when intensive cultivation is applied.

IRRIGATION PRACTICES

Wheat is not an irrigated crop in Slovenia.

PEST AND DISEASE RISK

The major pest and diseases are Blumeria graminis, Septoria nodorum and Septoria tritici and Oulema melanopus. In corresponding table also other pests and diseases are mentioned. Damage of all major pests varies a lot from year to year. On local scale in some years damage without protection could have catastrophic extent.

CROP ROTATION

It is not recommended to cultivated wheat after wheat while major decrease of yield could occur. There are several different types of crop rotation where wheat is included. The simplest and very common on some areas is two years rotation cycle where wheat alternate with maize. In more complex rotation other crops are included like in a following examples of possible rotations:

  • wheat, sugar beet, maize or
  • maize, wheat, potato.
