AGRICULTURE PRACTICES CALENDAR

Pre-winter ploughing normally occurs. In spring, field has to be levelled and/or treated with cultivator. After this step NPK fertilising has to be done followed by preparation of seedbed with a proper tillage machine (combined tool). Seedbed preparation should be shallow to assure better condition for seed germination (higher soil moisture content). First additional fertilising and hoeing started 30 to 40 days after sowing. Second application of fertilising and tillage with cultivators usually start about two months after sowing. Harvest is very limited with weather conditions (especially on heavier soils) so finish could be delayed later to the season during wet autumns.

IRRIGATION PRACTICES

Sugar beet is not an irrigated crop in Slovenia.

PEST AND DISEASE RISK

The major pests in sugar beet production are Agrostis spp. and Aphis fabea while the major fungi diseases are Cercospora beticola and Chaetocnema tibialis. In some cases could cause substantial damage on sugar beet.

CROP ROTATION

It is recommended to cultivate sugar beet on the same location every fourth even fifth year and not to follow cabbage cultivation or fodder beet. It is also not very convenience to follow maize cultivation.
